Why is there a need to medically induce labour?

birth weeks medically-induced labour normal term post-date risk factors stillbirth Nov 20, 2024

Although some believe it is more ideal to allow an overdue pregnancy to continue into its 43rd (or even 44th) week, at that stage statistically (and thus medically) the rate of unexplainable stillbirths increases significantly (and exponentially). So that risk factor is the main reason post-dates women are medically induced into labour. For example, pre-eclampsic toxaemia (high blood pressure with complications), diabetes, fetal growth restriction, reduced amniotic fluid volume, reduced fetal movements, prolonged pre-labour rupture of membranes, advanced maternal age, etc.
