It is now optional to discontinue using any formula and reduce milk to 2 bottles a day (say before day-sleep and at bedtime), with a maximum of about 600 ml milk a day — so it does not affect their appetite for solids. Or, go down to two breastfeeds a day.

  • Add citrus fruits, berry fruits (strawberries and raspberries are particularly rich in iron), cooked egg white, honey, tomatoes, eggplant, corn and capsicums.
  • Your toddler is now pretty much eating the same food as you at mealtimes, but just chopped up. Toddlers can also be useful consumers of adult leftovers the next day (or freeze leftovers in meal-sized lots for later).
  • Encourage them to enjoy raw vegetables, e.g. carrot sticks and cherry tomatoes.
  • Once walking, toddlers can want to increase their food intake — though they can also begin to display more prominent personal likes and dislikes!
  • At about two years you can add in shellfish and all nuts — but go easy on the inorganic peanuts.
