What can be a good guide to initial feeding?

initial feeding latch-on Nov 14, 2024

For the first 24 hours expect to feed your baby for about 15–20 minutes each side whenever he wants it (say 2–4 hourly). Be very vigilant to ensure correct latch-on during this first day. Day-one newborns can be very sleepy, though this typically changes on day two. For the second 24 hours expect to feed your baby for about 15–20 minutes each side every couple of hours or so. (The feed times are getting longer, because your baby is getting stronger and more experienced.) For the third day expect to feed your baby for about 15–20 minutes each side every 2–3 hours. Your milk may be starting to arrive. By the fourth day your milk will probably have come in, and you can begin feeding, for about 30–40 minutes total, approximately every 3 hours during the daytime and approximately 4-hourly overnight.
