What are some possible remedies for gastro-oesophageal reflux?
Nov 20, 2024Breastfeeding is strongly preferred over formula, because breastmilk is a natural antacid, is more rapidly digested, is more intestine-friendly and produces softer poos. • If breastfeeding, take lactation herbs to thicken your breastmilk; if formula-feeding, swap to a thickened formula. • If formula-feeding, the teat hole should permit milk droplets to flow at a too-fast-to-count-the-drips rate, but not ‘pour’ out. • Because swallowing air aggravates reflux, burping during and after feeds can make good sense — infant winding drops may also help. • Don’t encourage baby to become too ‘bonny’ — obesity can aggravate reflux. • Warmth on baby’s tummy can assist, e.g. a hot-water bottle or heat-pack wrapped in a cloth nappy. Gentle tummy massage may help. For homeopathic remedies or what to do on severe cases of reflux, please see page 300.
