What are some considerations when deciding to circumcise my child?
Nov 21, 2024Circumcision is now, generally, an elective surgery using local anaesthetic. It is usually performed when the boy is a few weeks old, with the parents paying the cost. And like all surgeries it has risks, including excessive bleeding, and infection. (The penis may occasionally be damaged irreparably.) Sometimes circumcision is clinically necessary due to a ballooning foreskin when the boy pees, and phimosis (when the opening of the foreskin is too narrow, preventing it from being drawn back). At the end of the day, it is a personal decision, often cultural, and one that deserves the non-judgmental respect of other peoples’ values.
