In New Zealand, the standard infant and childhood vaccinations endorsed by the New Zealand Government are decided by our drug licensing board Medsafe. Its purpose is to work independently of the pharmaceutical companies in an effort to cautiously ensure that New Zealand recommendations are unbiased. New Zealand GPs must fully promote all officially recommended vaccinations using government-sanctioned literature, or they lose their government funding. So, undoubtedly this too is not an atmosphere conducive to parents receiving unbiased opinion and all the information relevant to making a truly ‘informed consent decision free of any coercion’.
