How do you deal with a blocked duct?

A blocked (or plugged or clogged) duct is caused by milk congealing in a milk-secreting duct and shows itself as a pinkish-red flushed-looking patch on your breast with a tender concrete-like lump; or an area that is particularly painful during the milk let-down; or a white spot on the nipple with milk under the skin. To avoid a blocked duct progressing on to become a breast infection, it is imperative you slow your life down (to give your body time to heal); and that the breast gets sucked completely dry as soon as possible, using a breast pump if necessary; and continue to favour that side with lengthy frequent feeding until the red patch disappears.  Do also contact your LMC or GP, who may prescribe antibiotics. The homeopathic treatment phytollaca is also good.
