By three years of age, children start to evaluate themselves, potentially self-criticising, particularly if they’re often failing. And when this happens, which it will, our job is to show them how worthwhile and valuable all their efforts are; how invincible, lucky, and blessed they truly are; and to make them laugh so they know joy and gratefulness again. That’s what returns self-esteem from its time in the dungeons. We adults can struggle to find 50 things a day to laugh about, but preschoolers can potentially find 400!
