Do you recommend the use of sleeping props?
Nov 14, 2024Babies are completely capable of sleeping without props. It is simply the parent who mistakenly thinks their baby needs help. This is not saying that there will never be occasions when your child will need (and deserves) loving assistance to lull it to la-la land due to an unusual outside influence — like a bad cold, or a noisy neighbour’s party, or a plane flight, or a special event which forced your sweet babe to become unavoidably overtired. But that is very different from instilling sleep dysfunctions that become the norm. NO INDUCEMENTS FOR NORMAL SLEEP — otherwise you are going to create an insecure baby who is addictively dependent on some outside influence giving them the OK to sleep.
If you start using sleep props in the first couple of weeks, you can almost guarantee problems will clearly emerge as early as 6–8 weeks, when you discover that your wee baby is already heavily addicted to a particular sleep prop.
