At what point can baby poo be alarming?
Nov 19, 2024With all babies, the occasional random ‘green’ stool (moss-green, or resembling guacamole) is OK too, so long as it’s not accompanied by vomiting. However, small, hard, dry poos (like rabbit droppings) are a strong sign of dehydration. And consistently green, soft poo can be a sign of foremilk snacking feeds (baby is not getting the fat-rich hindmilk). It is normal for babies to vocalise some noises when doing poos (as they haven’t yet learnt the social etiquette of not grunting). But if you feel your baby is excessively straining to poo then your wee baby may have a spastic or tight anal sphincter muscle, which it’s best to talk to your GP about.
